Vajk Szebedy

Three main activities have kept Vajk Szebedy busy and motivated in his life. He has been interested in sports, especially football and skateboarding. He has also enjoyed playing music, including the cello, guitar, and harmonica. Art, which he learned to love through his father and grandmother, has been another significant passion. The experience of creating an object is an extraordinary feeling for him. Through the cello and skateboarding, he was introduced to the many facets of wood, and through rudimentary tinkering with his father, he became familiar with the workability of wood. He would like to achieve a clearer value system for himself in terms of the artistic and functional aspects of the objects he creates. It is important for him to learn more about the different ways of working with wood and other materials. He has been working for a year under a master carpenter, where he has learned to use a number of hand tools, work with wood finely, and gained insight into the design process.

He is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Product and Design Engineering at the University of Óbuda. He has been able to learn the technical aspects of design and the steps involved in object design. He is an in-depth student with a persistent experimental and analytical design thinking.

About the object

The design of this furniture was inspired by the relationship between a well-known hero and his loyal sidekick. He aimed to give the furniture characteristics similar to this relationship. The goal of his design was to create a piece of furniture that would help tidy up a messy room. Through his questionnaire research, he identified three groups of objects that could cause problems in terms of their placement in a room. The first group includes clothes that have been worn but are not yet ready for their next wash, often ending up on the sofa, bed, or chair due to a lack of a more suitable place. In the second group, he included items that are used frequently and are usually carried in a bag or trouser pocket during the day. These items include phones, wallets, keys, power banks, and other everyday objects. The third group consists of items that do not belong in the room but tend to accumulate there. This could include borrowed items, glasses, mugs, and rubbish that cannot or will not be thrown away or properly placed elsewhere in the room.
