Fresh, contemporary, and playfully experimental: the architectural studio Space Buffet won the first-ever architectural design competition of the 360 Design Budapest exhibition. Founded by Ingrid Manhertz and Albert Manhertz, the team’s concept – in line with the curatorial selection – transforms the location into an exhibition experience, where space becomes more than a mere frame: it transforms into an independent medium for delivering value.
The sixth exhibition of 360 Design Budapest will take place in a truly special setting: it will showcase the finest in contemporary Hungarian and regional product design in the historical atmosphere of the Buda Castle District. Between 9 and 19 October, visitors can discover the diverse and inspiring world of design within the centuries-old walls of 1 Táncsics Mihály Street.
The Architectural Concept of the Space
Space Buffet’s architectural design addresses both the exhibition’s motto – focusing on the connections between designers, manufacturers, and users – and the layered, visually rich atmosphere of the prestigious building. The spatial concept aims to transform the maze-like, stylistically diverse rooms into a single amorphous space that visitors can experience as a continuous pathway. They realise this through a modular installation that shapes the visitor’s journey with alternating volumes, pauses, diagonals, and perspectives. Thus, the modular system composes a liveable order from the various individual works, where the creation of “islands” allows for a collective experience.
The Faces of Space Buffet
Ingrid Manhertz earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Department of Architecture and Design of METU. Since graduating in 2022, she has also been teaching at the university while pursuing doctoral studies at the University of Pécs. A frequent traveller by intention, she integrates the effects of changing environments into both her design and academic work. Albert Manhertz, continuing a family tradition, trained as a stonemason, architectural sculptor, and artificial stone maker after secondary school, while working alongside his father on historic buildings, gaining a solid foundation of practical knowledge. Later, at MOME, he experimented with a wide range of manual and digital techniques, shaping a complex design approach.
