The centuries-old walls of Buda Castle District will become home to contemporary design from 9–19 October. 360 Design Budapest moves into its new venue at 1 Táncsics Mihály Street, a building steeped in history and art, where past and present can engage in inspiring dialogue.
The late Baroque palace, with its rich architectural and historical heritage, reached its final form in 1774. During the Second World War, it served as the residence of the British Embassy and suffered serious damage, which was later restored in 1970. In the following decades, it housed the National Heritage Protection Office and, earlier, its predecessor, the National Monument Protection Office. Visitors can also admire several artworks created specifically for the building. Passing through the ornate gateway into the atrium, they are greeted by a monumental mosaic by Endre Domanovszky, Kossuth and Munkácsy Prize-winning painter, completed in 1971. On the first floor stands a decorative fountain by Mihály Mészáros, Munkácsy Prize-winning sculptor, while the main staircase is adorned with a tapestry by Mária Thúry, installed in 1973.
Throughout its history, 360 Design Budapest has always maintained a strong relationship between its venues and exhibitions, as the buildings were never mere backdrops but shaped the interpretation of the exhibitions as active partners. The previous iconic venues, such as the waiting hall of Nyugati Railway Station, the Adria Palace, and the Bálna building, all became parts of the concept’s narrative. This year is no exception: the historical and artistic layers of 1 Táncsics Mihály Street, complemented by contemporary elements, provide a perfect setting for an exhibition that highlights the dialogue between past and present, connecting historical roots with contemporary creativity.
